A quick announcement: I’ll be taking a six-week sabbatical from this newsletter, starting now. New installments will return on Sunday, June 5—on an updated schedule, and with an updated vibe.
Writing weekly for the past 18 months (!) has been awesome, but lately I’ve been feeling like this newsletter has hit a rut. I’ve mined the surface deposits of my consciousness, said all the things I’ve been thinking about for years, and returned to the same themes often enough that some of them are starting to lose their luster. And I suspect my audience can feel it too: my subscriber growth has slowed over the past few months, as has the frequency of pieces people say really connect with them.
Perhaps more importantly, I’ve now done this consistently for long enough that I’m no longer worried that if I take any time off I’ll break my streak, lose my momentum, and never write another word again.
I’m definitely not running out of things to write about, but I am running out of things to write about that can be done well in a week (or, more realistically, a weekend). I’m finding myself itching write pieces that are more substantial and, frankly, just better—work that needs to percolate for longer than 48 hours, or even essays that require research. In the spirit of “what got you here won’t get you there,” I’m going to take the next six weeks to refresh, regroup, and figure out what the right topics, schedule, and goals are for this newsletter’s future. I’ll be back—and hopefully better than ever—in six weeks.
Thanks for being along for the ride, and see you in June,
